InGriffin was convicted of distributing material likely to incite racial hatredfor which he received a suspended prison sentence. In he was acquitted of separate charges of inciting racial hatred.
Griffin has been criticised for many of his comments on political, social, ethical and religious matters, but after becoming leader of the BNP he sought to distance himself from some of his previously held positions, which included Holocaust denial.
In recent years, events where Griffin has been invited to participate in public debates or political discussions have proven controversial and often resulted in protests and cancellations.
The son of former Conservative councillor Edgar Griffin who was expelled from the Conservatives amid accusations of racism and his wife Jean, Nicholas John Griffin was born on 1 March in Barnet and moved to Southwold in Suffolk aged eight. Griffin read Adolf Hitler 's Mein Kampf when he was 14, and "found all but one chapter extremely boring". In a four-page leaflet written inWebster claimed to have had a homosexual relationship with Griffin, then the BNP's publicity director.
FromGriffin studied history, then law, at Downing College, Cambridge. He later founded the Young National Front Student organisation. He graduated with a lower second-class honours degree in lawand a boxing bluehaving taken up the sport following a brawl in Lewisham with a member of an anti-fascist party. In an interview with The Independenthe said he gave it up because of a hand injury.
Following his graduation, Griffin became a political worker at the National Front headquarters. Membership of the National Front declined significantly following the election of the Conservatives under Margaret Thatcher.
Bythe group had broken away to form the NF Political Soldier faction, which advocated a revival of country "values" and a return to feudalism with the establishment of nationalist communes. Following a disagreement with Harrington who subsequently formed the Third Wayand objections over the direction the party was heading, inGriffin left the National Front. He later stewarded a public Holocaust denial meeting hosted by David Irving.
The electors of Millwall did not back a post modernist rightist party, but what they perceived to be a strong, disciplined organisation with the ability to back up its slogan "Defend Rights for Whites" with well-directed boots and fists. Tyndall, also previously in the National Front, had founded the BNP inbut his "brutal, streetfighting background" and admiration for Hitler and the Nazis had made any kind of respectability impossible.
He was helped by Tyndall's lack of familiarity with the mainstream media, and in the party's September election he defeated Tyndall to become head of the BNP. One of Griffin's changes included moderating the party's emphasis on the removal of multiculturalism, a policy it claims has a destructive influence on both immigrant and British cultures. Street protests were replaced by electoral campaigning, and some policies were moderated the compulsory repatriation of ethnic minorities was instead made voluntary.
Other policies included the introduction of capital punishment for paedophiles, rapists, drug dealers and some murderers, and corporal punishment for less serious crimes such as juvenile delinquency. Griffin's image as a Cambridge-educated family man was in contrast to the extremist image presented by the BNP under Tyndall's leadership. Griffin has stood as his party's candidate in several English elections since joining the BNP.
Inhe stood in West Bromwich Westin a by-election triggered by the resignation of Betty Boothroyd. Griffin claimed that he knew the identity of the individual responsible, describing him as a hard-line senior employee who had left the party in the previous year. He welcomed the publicity that the story generated, using it to describe the common perception of the average BNP member as a "skinhead oik " as untrue. A line of police blocked a large group of protesters, who chanted "No platform for Nazi Nick" and "Nazi scum off our streets".News Ticker.

But in 60 painful minutes - if host David Dimbleby keeps order - Griffin will probably duck the killer questions: he will not self-implode before our eyes. More likely, by twist and turn, Griffin will emerge intact. His party and his views will gain immense free publicity; his own infamy will be further guaranteed.
He will see it as mission accomplished. Arguably, this is the price we all pay for democracy - although many believe the BBC has needlessly handed him a priceless coup.
But away from the television spotlight, who is Griffin? What does he say when his guard is down? And how do those closest to him - past and present - speak of the man?Nick Griffin: More People Smoke Pot Than Eat Bread
In my research for his unauthorised biography, I accumulated 20 hours of videotaped interviews with Griffin, and many more with his wife, children, parents, minders, political opponents, senior BNP figures and the National Front leaders who shaped his views: John Tyndall and Martin Webster. Griffin emerges as more than just an odious racist. Yes, he is clever, cunning and capable of delivering his racism through carefully articulated argument.
But he is also dangerous and deranged - a man whose personal Utopia is for every white Briton to embrace national socialism, Griffin-style, and for every non-white Briton to leave these islands. The BNP accumulated nearly a million votes in the Euro elections, partly by exploiting Winston Churchill's memory. But when I asked Griffin if he admired or respected Churchill, he responded curtly: 'Not particularly, no.
Nor is Griffin a democrat. He boasted to me that an armed struggle may be necessary should the party not win ultimate power at Westminster through the ballot box. Griffin describes himself as 'a Strasserite' - Gregor Strasser was a key Nazi Party figure who was strongly critical of capitalism and preferred a more socialist approach to finance - and his views amount to orthodox fascism. As a child, his grandfather encouraged him to pick one of Mosley's works from his bookshelves, an event Griffin remembers clearly.
The family home was spacious, but the Griffins existed in genteel poverty - Nick got 'used to eating sugar sandwiches for dinner'. His father Edgar's electrical business in St John's Wood had failed, so he taught himself accountancy and became a Conservative councillor. Today, he is retired. He ranted to me about 'the coloureds' and 'the Muslim threat. You have children, don't you? Can't you see the terrible evil of these people in this country?
It was Edgar who taught his son the politics of race, but no encouragement was needed.
Nick quickly spotted the Jewish boys at school. A favourite game was 'counting black people on the streets from the car window when my parents drove through London'. The family then moved to Suffolk, where, at his old school in Woodbridge, Griffin once informed the librarian, Catherine Williamson: 'I'm a socialist, a National Socialist.
At 13, he studied Hitler's Mein Kampf, making notes in the margins. He thought it boring, but found the chapter on propaganda 'very useful. Eventually, during our many hours of discussions, Griffin conceded to me: 'Yes, Adolf went a bit too far. Griffin was a bright boy at a rather indifferent school and won a place at Cambridge University.
A National Front student organiser, 'beaten up by the Reds', he took up boxing and gained a blue. One undergraduate opponent was a Nigerian called Amure, with whom Griffin 'joked' about 'blacks behaving so badly and walking like monkeys'.You can always start with a two-hour day of thrift and vintage shopping through Free Tours By Foot.
